Our Mission
The ongoing mission of Fat City Farmers is “growing farmers”. Fat City Farmers came into being in 2006 to create opportunities for local food education in the Roaring Fork Valley of western Colorado, by establishing gardens, greenhouses, and educational programs in organic agricultural biology, based on the principles of “Permaculture”, a fast developing practice of sustainable food production and natural living in the modern age. Our completed facilities to date include the Yampah Mountain High School in Glenwood Springs and the Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale CO.
We have chosen to focus our initial efforts on high quality, local food for the school lunch program to address the many health issues now affecting youth, as well as an educational program to inspire young people to raise food for themselves and their community. We are collaborating with Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute, and with the RE-1 School District to help educate a new generation of organic farmers and support food quality and sustainability for the whole community.
Dr. Illene Pevec, FCF’s Program Director, is currently developing gardening curricula that is integrated into existing science courses in high school and middle school course materials, as well as developing teacher training workshops that provide them with the skills and inspiration to integrate gardening education into their other courses of study.
